Well connected
highway system for efficient passenger and freight travel
Highway 2 (Queen Elizabeth 2
Highway) - part of Canamex Highway System
Four lane divided expressway (six
lanes in some areas), mostly upgraded to freeway standard. Connects the
two main cities in Alberta, Calgary and Edmonton, which in turn links to
east-west Trans Canada highways (Highway 1 through Calgary and Highway
16 through
Edmonton); and north-south highways to northern Alberta and south to the
Montana border.
Highway 11 (David Thompson route)
links the Glacier Parkway in Banff
National Park and Rocky Mountain House, Sylvan Lake in the west to
Joffre, Stettler and the Saskatchewan border in the east. Red Deer to
Sylvan being upgraded to four lane divided.
Highway 2A (parallels main Canadian Pacific Rail Calgary-Edmonton
line)
an alternate north south route that
goes through several of the towns in the Calgary-Red Deer-Edmonton
corridor including Olds, Bowden, Innisfail, Penhold, Springbrook, Red
Deer, Blackfalds, Lacombe and Ponoka.
Highway 12 (includes former Buffalo Trail)
an east west route linking Bentley,
Gull Lake, Lacombe, Alix, Stettler and east to Saskatchewan border. On
the west end it links with Highway 22 north of Rocky Mountain House.
Highway 21 (originally the Boomtown Trail)
a north south route east of the
Highway 2 corridor linking east Edmonton with Bashaw, Delburne, Trochu
and south to Highway 1.
Highway 22 (originally the Cowboy Trail)
a north south route west of the
Highway 2 corridor parallel to the Rocky Mountains linking Drayton
Valley, Rocky Mountain House, Caroline, Sundre, Cochrane and Highway 1
just west of Calgary.
Highway 20
runs north from Sylvan Lake,
Bentley, Rimbey to Highway 16 (Trans Canada Yellowhead route).
Highway 53
runs east from Highway 22 through
Rimbey, Ponoka, Bashaw and east.
Highway 54
runs from Innisfail west to
Spruceview and Caroline.
Highway 42
runs from Penhold east to Pine Lake
and Highway 21.
Highway 27
runs east from Highway 22 near
Sundre through Olds to Trochu and Highway 56.
Highway 56
north south route east of Highway 21, runs from Camrose through Stettler
to Drumheller

Air Travel
The Regional Airport Red Deer
(formerly Red Deer Regional Airport)
Scheduled passenger service provided by Peace Air to Calgary,
Edmonton, Grande Prairie (direct), Fort McMurray, Fort St. John,
Lloydminster. The centre for commercial aviatiion located 8 km south of
Red Deer in Springbrook. Terminal building with parking for 200
vehicles, security screening. Charter services, flight training services
and several air related businesses.

Canadian Pacific Railway
Several freight trains per day. Main line between Calgary and Edmonton.
Divisional centre in Red Deer. Freight service in Red Deer, Innisfail,
Penhold, Lacombe, Blackfalds, Ponoka, Olds. Spur line from Lacombe to
Prentiss, Alix, Stettler. Connection with CN Rail north of Red Deer.
Canadian National Railway
A few freight trains per day between Calgary and Edmonton through Bashaw,
Alix, Delburne, Trochu. Spur line connects Joffre, Prentiss and Red Deer
daily; Sylvan Lake and Rocky Mountain House twice per week.

Downtown terminal in Red Deer.
Serves most communities in region. Express to Edmonton and Calgary.
