The Town of Stettler is the largest community in Stettler County
Stettler is a full-service
community in east Central Alberta an hour east of Red Deer and is the
focal point of the area's agricultural, energy and commercial sectors.
The town's major attraction is the very popular Alberta Prairie Railway
Excursions. The town is also close to Buffalo Lake.
The community is named after Carl Stettler, a native of Switzerland, who
homesteaded just east of the present town in 1903. A bustling hamlet
called 'Blumenau' was established on his property in 1905 with several
businesses. When the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived that same year,
the entire community of Blumenau moved to the current site, which was
named Stettler. The fast-growing townsite was incorporated as a village
in June 1906 and became a town later that same year. The Canadian
Northern Railway arrived in 1911.
